Johnny E. Simon, Jr. Memorial Scholarship
The Johnny E. Simon, Jr. Memorial Scholarship offers college scholarships to students with financial need who have achieved academic excellence, display strong citizenship and character, and possess a desire to make a meaningful contribution to society.

History
The Johnny E. Simon, Jr. Memorial Scholarship was established in 2008 by the Board of Commissioners of the Housing Authority of DeKalb County to honor the memory of Mr. Simon, a Housing Authority employee of 32 years.

Mr. Simon was born in Atlanta, Georgia on August 23, 1950 to John and Bessie Simon. He graduated from Murphy High School in 1968. He attended Hutchinson Junior College in Hutchinson, Kansas. He played offensive tackle on the National Championship team in 1968 and 1969. He was also selected as an All-American. He then attended the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky. He made First Team All Conference and graduated in 1971 with a B.S. in History and Physical Education.

Mr. Simon possessed a passion for inspiring, motivating, and uplifting youth. He was a volunteer coach for several athletic teams. He was a mentor, role-model, and leader within the Decatur and DeKalb Housing Authority community for 32 years. He was instrumental in implementing numerous programs, clubs, activities, and events that provided youth with an opportunity to improve their well-being through activities for daily living and etiquette, athletic coordination and fitness, academic enrichment and achievement, environmental awareness, and community activism. He also serviced the Authority's senior citizens by coordinating and providing transportation to a variety of events.

In his life-time of accomplishments, Mr. Simon received several merits of honor and accolades for devoting his time to helping others. Throughout his life he was able to reach out to and help many people of diverse backgrounds and walks of life.

Award Two individual scholarships will be awarded each year. Each scholarship will be for $1,500 per academic year. All grants must be applied to tuition and fees only and will be paid directly to the institution. Recipients may re-apply each year for up to four years, provided they continue to meet the scholarship criteria. Scholarship funding availability will be reviewed on an annual basis by the Executive Director.
