DCHA is Recipient of 2002 NAHRO Agency Award of Merit for Tobie Grant Community Garden

The Dekalb County Housing Authority (DCHA) is a 2002 recipient of an Award of Merit from the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) for it's improved design of the Community Garden at the Tobie Grant Manor public housing development. The NAHRO Agency Awards of Merit give national recognition to innovative housing and community development projects, programs, and services provided by NAHRO agency members throughout the country.

The Tobie Grant Manor Community Garden was founded in 1985 by residents and the Authority to provide activities for the housing development's seniors and to strengthen the sense of community for all residents. In past years, residents with mobility limitations found it difficult to access the garden and reach the low-lying plant beds. The newly redesigned Community Garden was intended to improve quality of life in the community and act as a social focal point for the elderly residents at Tobie Grant by allowing access for a wider group of seniors, including those with mobility limitations.

DCHA used Capital Funds on the design and installation of the improvements to the Community Garden. These funds went toward the installation of the new raised planters, irrigation, addition of new soil, and the installation of new recycled rubber paths. DCHA also provided staff support for the planning and implementation phases of the project. Seniors participating in the Garden Club applied for and were awarded a grant from a local community non-profit. These funds were used to purchase a large composting bin and to buy garden hoses and tools for the Garden Club members. Residents contribute to the long-term upkeep of the garden with a $1 monthly plot fee paid by each of the participants. Additional contributions come from the community in the form of volunteer services and consultation from the University of Georgia Extension Service and the Atlanta Metro Garden Club.

The Tobie Grant gardeners have won numerous awards and recognition for the fruits and vegetables they have grown. Each year Tobie Grant hosts the Atlanta Metro Garden Club for a festive holiday luncheon and program.
